A group without leaders will go no-where. We are lucky to have the follwoing volunteers, who have their own heavy study and research too, to carry this important work for us. Some of them have been student leaders before, some are new. However, they all have two things in common: their willingness to serve our Wash. U. community and their courage to challenge themselves for a higher standard. They need your encouragement and they need your support.

Executive Officers

President: Li, Cong Lucy
email: cli@artsci.wustl.edu

Hi, everyone! I am Lucy Li and I serve as the President of I-CAN for the year 2009-2010. I want to introduce you to our dear group I-CAN. We are a university-wide graduate student group registered at WashU. We have recruited a hundred and thirty-five student members in the past year and a half. In the group, we create a very comfortable environment for every group member to improve communication skills, build up networks, and practice leadership, and thus enhance job marketability. It is realized by 1) holding series of workshops regarding professional development, and many socializing events; and 2) creating opportunities for group member to organize the activities he or she like.

Besides, I-CAN has a team of lovely, creative and responsible leaders listed below, who understand the difficulties of international students and are dedicated to serve the group. It is my honor to work with them. Our leaders will do our best to promise a successful year, and we hope to share all the great experience with you. So come and join the warm family!

Duty: shall be responsible for overall coordination of I-CAN, such as maintaining the infrastructure, conducting board meetings, representing I-CAN, conducting organization business, mediating controversial issues between I-CAN members, and coordinating I-CAN activities (communicate with chairpersons and make sure they are in the process of organizing activities. If chair persons have any questions or problems, try to help them or give them advice on how to get assistance from other places, but not to take the responsibility of organizing the activity for the chairperson).

Vice President: Lu, Paul
email: p.lu@wustl.edu

Having spent the first 11 years of my life growing up in Taiwan and another 10 years in New Zealand, I am now here, in St. Louis, pursuing a PhD in Neuroscience. When I first joined I-CAN as a member, it did not take long for me to realize that this is a group that consistently exceeded my expectations. Not only professional workshops, career development and networking opportunities were offered; a varity of entertaining recreational and cultural exchange activities are always happening. By simply browsing the introductions of our officers and senators, one can appreciate this group is comprised of a spectrum of people with diverse backgrounds and areas of specialization in our graduate community. I had a very rewarding experience with this group as a member (and there's always plenty more to learn from); and I look forward to extending these opportunities to more people on our campus.

Duty: shall represent the President in his/her absense, work with other board members to oversee policymaking, organize senator meetings and take minutes.

Vice President of Programming and Webmaster: Mathews, Aswin John
email: aswinjohn@gmail.com

In my undergraduate years, I was in charge of bringing the first IEEE branch founded in our college to speed. During this time, I was also involved in organizing events such as the national level technical colloquium. Beyond my undergraduate years, I was employed for a brief period at my undergrad college, where I helped organize a number of events, including a Robotics workshop, a Distinguished Lecture series. In Washington University, I have been the Vice President (Admin) of Umang, the Indian graduate students association and their technological representative. I believe that ICAN is uniquely posed among other graduate groups in that it is a university wide group to provide members with an opportunity to take up leadership roles and expand their professional development.  I can contribute to the group in form of ideas, organizing activities and increasing the diversity.

During those days, I was very happy to chatting with people who came from different countries. This is also a reason why I came to the US, which has much more various cultures than Shanghai. Besides, I have several other hobbies, such as swimming, tennis and travelling.

Duty for VP of Programming: be the Group Mail Manager if no suitable person available or if the Group Mail Manager leaves in the middle of the year; chair at least one activitiy in the year; help the President coordinate other activities.

Outreach Coordinator and senator:
Baumgaertel, Reinhard
email: rbaumgaertel@gwbmail.wustl.edu

Reinhard Baumgaertel is my name. Germany is my origin, but the U.S. is my home. Social work is my program. Through I-CAN, I expect to support platforms where cultural and professional versatilities are interwined, maximizing our confidence in navigating through an increasingly conflated world. I often tend to skip discussions over professional ambitions, as these are just tools in our paths to greatness. Instead, commitments emerge wherever I can learn from, engage in, and inspire, a life where connectedness builds on a wide array of identities, values and dreams, and human possibility. I am a steward of the earth (please keep pollution and waste down), and believe in a genuinely healthy and balanced life; I feel attracted to cities where human bustle abounds, but also the quietude of the mountains and the oceans. I cherish opportunities where imagination and creativitiy can blossom.

Duty: promote the diversity of I-CAN; increase the popularity of I-CAN in WashU community; and the regular duty of a senator.

Hi, I am Jianqing Li "Tony", a 2nd year DBBS student from China. Living in another country can be fascinating if we continue to try different things and make new friends. During the past one year, I was fortunate enough to be able to make lots of friends. Their company and support brighten my everyday life. Now I am ready to move forward, to help all the international students interact with each other by trying leadership in an organization. Among so many sorts of associations, i-can has been my first choice, not only because it matches my backgound perfectly, as international student, but also due to its highly emphasis on communication and networking. Being a senator may be challenging, not to mention for a complete "newbie" in leadership. Can I face those challenges? Yes, I-CAN

My name is Yan Zhong, I'd like to nominate myself for the senator position of I-CAN. I am from Changsha, a Chinese city full of passionate people and terrific cooks, like me J. In China, I was very active in the student organizations and activities (positions listed below). My varied talents brought me plenty of prizes on writing, drawing, speaking, singing, acting and studying. Within one week after I came to St. Louis, I was highly praised for making delicious food by my roommates, and they called "Great Cook Zhang". Within one month, I joined in the CSSA Karaokay competition and won a prize. Now I am a member of CSSA choir and have given performances on the Chinese Spring Festival Celebration in St. Louis, the CSSA Lantern Festival Celebration and Global Leadership Vision Reception. I am a quick learner, able to communicate with virtually all walks of life. I would like to contribute my efforts to make I-CAN more successful and more prosperous. I also want to look for co-singers to voice the emotion in life, so speakers to have a hot debate, co-writers or readers to share the fiction conceived in my head, and co-drawers to create beauty that can't be found in the real world.

We are also recruiting new students as senators in the fall. Interested students please find information here .
